Heinrich applied for membership in the NSDAP on October 23rd, 1938 and was accepted on September 1st, 1938 with the membership number 7016097. His membership card was issued on January 31st, 1939.
Military notes for Johann Heinrich Hoppe
Heinrich joined the army on September 20th, 1940. He served as an ambulance driver from 1941-1944. He was located in Drontheim (Norway). In 1944 he was send to the east front. [32]

Heinrich was captured by the Russian Army at the Sereth river, close to the Hungarian border, on September 6th, 1944. He appeared first in the Russian records as being placed in the hospital camp nr. 3006 in Drushkowka, Doneszk, Ukraine. From there, he was registered in the Russian camp (Gulag) nr, 217 and nr. 247 in the area of Doneszk, Ukraine. From his own recollection, he was imprisoned in Konstantinovka, Doneszk, Ukraine. [17]

Heinrich also filled in a KEG card in an attempt to receive a reimbursment for his time as a prisoner of war. He wrote in his application that he was in collecting camp Jassy in Rumania from September 6th, 1944 until December 3rd 1944. He was then in the camp Drushkowka 217/8 from December 10th 1944 until March 1947. From March 1947 until August 1949 he was in the camp Konstantinowka 242/7.

He was released from his imprisonment in the camp Gronefelde (Frankfurt an der Oder) on August 16th, 1949.
